Ground-Mounted Solar in Connecticut

When your roof is shaded, faces the wrong way or is too small, I put the panels in your yard instead. A ground mount earns the same Connecticut incentives as a rooftop system, with no holes in your roof.

Quick Facts

The Short Answer

What Is a Ground-Mounted Solar System?

Ground-mounted solar array installed by Premier Improvements in Burlington, Connecticut

A ground mount sets your solar panels on a steel or aluminum rack in your yard instead of on your roof. Foundations go below the frost line. The wiring runs underground in conduit to your house.

It fits homes where the roof does not. Heavy shade, a north-facing roof, a small roof or a roof you do not want drilled all point to the yard. I tell homeowners this in my solar fit check. A ground mount solves heavy shade on some properties with open yard space.

Fit Check

Who Ground-Mounted Solar Fits

A ground mount fits you when

  • Trees or nearby buildings shade your roof most of the day.
  • Your roof faces north or has little usable space.
  • You have open, sunny yard space with room for the array and the trench run.
  • You want no holes in your roof, or your roof is a material you do not want drilled.
  • You want panels you reach from the ground for snow and cleaning.

Roof mount fits better when

  • Your roof gets steady sun and faces south, east or west.
  • Your yard is small, shaded or used for other things.
  • You want the lowest price per watt.

Roof in good sun? Start with residential rooftop solar. Roof older than 10 years? See new roof and solar packages.

Cost

How Much Does Ground Mount Solar Cost in CT?

A ground mount costs more per watt than a rooftop system. For context, EnergySage reported a typical Connecticut rooftop system in October 2026 at about $2.68 per watt. A ground mount adds cost on top of that for these items.

  • Racking and foundations: a ground rack and footings set below the frost line.
  • Trench and wire: the farther the array sits from your house, the longer the trench and the heavier the wire.
  • Site work: slope, ledge, rock and tree removal change the job.
  • Permits: your town decides setbacks and placement.

I walk your yard, measure the trench run and price the job in writing. No guesswork. Start with my 3D solar estimator and compare payment options in the cash vs loan vs lease calculator.

Incentives

Ground Mounts Earn the Same CT Incentives

  • RRES Buy-All pays $0.3289 per kWh for 20 years for systems enrolling in 2026, and owned systems add $0.032 per kWh.
  • RRES systems top out at 25 kW.
  • Connecticut exempts residential solar from property tax when expected production does not exceed the home’s use. File with your town assessor by November 1 after installation.
  • Solar equipment and installation labor are exempt from Connecticut sales tax.
  • Smart-E loans run up to $50,000 at 6.99 to 7.99 percent APR.
  • The federal 25D credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ground mount solar cost in Connecticut?

More per watt than a rooftop system, because of the rack, the foundations and the trench. EnergySage reported a typical Connecticut rooftop system at about $2.68 per watt in October 2026. I price every ground mount in writing after a site visit.

Is ground mount solar worth it?

It is worth it when your roof is shaded, faces north or has little space and your yard gets steady sun. It earns the same RRES payments and tax exemptions as a rooftop system.

How far from the house does a ground-mounted array sit?

No single number fits every home. Distance adds trench length and wire size, so I design the run for your yard and include it in the written price.

Do I need a permit for ground mount solar in CT?

Yes. Your town requires a building permit, and local zoning rules set where the array sits on your property. My team files the permits.

Does a ground mount qualify for the RRES program?

Yes. RRES covers residential solar for Eversource and United Illuminating customers, up to 25 kW, on the same Buy-All and Netting tariffs as rooftop systems.
